Here are some helpful guidelines and ideas for healthy living. Some may be a refresher, others may be new and exciting!
1. GET BACK TO BASICS
Eat well. Move more. Sleep. Repeat.
2. MORE PLANNING = MORE RESULTS
Write down your goals each day to become even more productive.
Without some accountability, it’s easy to stray off the path and not accomplish what you would like to. If you fall short, don’t beat yourself up, just try better next time!
3. STUBBORNNESS IS STILL STUPIDITY
If you have a fitness goal planned, like a 5K, don’t go from the couch to the race the next day! Take the time to work up to your goal so you can accomplish it without injury and safely.
4. DIETS CAN WORK…BUT CHOOSE “YOURS”
“Dieting” or changing the way you eat and foods you choose is very personal. We’ve talked about how what works for your best friend may not help you at all. For example, “slimming tea” works great for me but does nothing for my honey. Weight watchers worked for both of us but we put the weight back on and more, whereas some people are able to maintain just fine.
It helps if you follow a few basic guidelines:
1) Find a plan that is rooted in science. The basic idea of “calories in=calories out” for example. And not all “Doctor Based” programs are – do your research first!
2) Learn the details and rules of a specific diet approach and see if you think it’d work for your lifestyle.
3) Try it out and see if it works.
5. FIND A MENTOR AND RELY ON YOUR FRIENDS!
Find someone who is doing what you want and/or has accomplished something similar to your goal/s, reach out to them, and do all that you can to learn from their model and adjust it to your life and your own style. Also, working out with a buddy WORKS whether it’s the “lunchtime walk gang” or a gym buddy/group. You’ll be there to support each other and help each other stay on track.
6. GET SOCIAL…MEDIA
Tweet, post of Facebook, use LinkedIn. Whatever method you use, getting positive feedback during your journey and once you’ve accomplished any of your goals is a powerful motivator to keep going.
7. YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOUR DESTINY
Check out sites like Livestrong.com, Sparkpeople.com, and even Weight Watchers to read inspiring stories of people who achieved their dreams and changed their lives. Know that if they can do, so can you!
8. WANT TO LOSE FAT…LIFT THOSE WEIGHTS
Pretty basic but still true! In this world of cardio, cardio, cardio, resistance training is still the best way to tone and lose fat. Put the two together and you have a winning combo!
9. FIND A HEALTHY BALANCE
There’s nothing wrong with pushing yourself, setting high standards and not settling to achieve your health goals. But you still need to have fun! Laugh, smile, share your stories with friends. Having strong social support really has been shown to help us with follow through to accomplish our goals and dreams.
10. PAY IT FORWARD
This is again, self explanatory. Give back the gift you’ve received of improved health and fitness by encouraging others, whether friends or someone struggling at the gym. Do those fundraising walks and find other ways you can volunteer and give back to your community. Not only does it improve your self esteem and confidence, but it just makes you feel good!
